Moving Daze

Moving is a painful process.

I decided several weeks ago that I needed to have one name for my virtual presence as a library media specialist. With the help of some good friends I came up with a new name for my blog, purchased that domain, and modified my Twitter handle. I began posting.

The one concern I had was linking my old posts to this blog, especially as the URL for that blog seemed to no longer work.
In my mind, it seemed that the best solution was to create a page on this blog that contained all of these old posts. How complicated could it be to move them? A little copying, a little pasting and all would be well - right?

*Cue laughter*

I am, sadly, somewhat of a specialist in finding the most complicated way to do something. This endeavor fit quite neatly into that category, but several hours and a good night's sleep later it's done. The bonus was that I had occasion to re-read all of my old posts.

We encourage our students to reflect all the time. What have you done? Why did you do it? How did you do it?

As teachers, we tend to reflect on the day's lessons, but seldom on the larger past. Re-reading my blog posts caused me to reflect on my past several years in the Media Center - the good and bad, the successes and flops. I was able to see how I've changed my approach in certain ways and remained steadfast in others. It was much more enlightening than most other self-reflection tools I've had to use.

Even if you don't publish it for anyone to see, I would encourage all teachers to try and blog a few times a month about what they're doing in their classrooms. It is a good way to immediately process what you've done, and after some time has passed it is a good way to gauge professional growth.
